Adult ADHD: “Why Is It So Hard for Me to Focus?”

“Why is it so hard for me to focus?” is one of the internet's most-asked questions — and for a lot of adults, the answer turns out to be ADHD that was never recognized. ADHD isn't just a childhood condition or a matter of laziness; it's a difference in how the brain manages attention, organization, and impulse.

What adult ADHD can look like

Why it's so often missed

Many adults — especially women — were never diagnosed as kids because their symptoms looked more like daydreaming, anxiety, or “trying harder” than like hyperactivity. Some people cope for years until life demands (a career, parenting, a big change) outpace their strategies.

Getting a real answer

A quick online quiz can't diagnose ADHD. A proper evaluation looks at your history since childhood, current symptoms, and other conditions that can mimic or accompany ADHD (like anxiety, depression, or sleep problems). In my practice, I take that time and use standardized assessment so the diagnosis is accurate — because getting it right matters.

What helps

ADHD is very manageable. Treatment often combines medication (stimulant or non-stimulant) with practical strategies and support for the executive-function skills that make daily life work. Many adults describe finally understanding themselves — and getting traction — once they have the right diagnosis and plan.
