What to Expect at Your First Psychiatric Visit
If you have a first psychiatric appointment coming up, it's completely normal to feel nervous. Many people worried they'd be judged, labeled, or rushed. So let me walk you through what actually happens.
It starts as a conversation
Your first visit is longer than a typical medical appointment, because the goal is to understand you. We'll talk about what brings you in, your history, your health, and what you're hoping for. You set the pace and share as much as you're ready to.
I won't rush to a label
Understanding a person takes more than one visit. We begin building a picture together and a plan for next steps — but you are a whole person with a story, not a diagnosis to be slotted into a box.
Medication, therapy, or both
A plan might include medication, therapy, or both — decided together, with the options and reasoning explained in plain language.
A few things that help
- A list of any medications and supplements you take.
- Any questions you've been holding onto.
- A private, quiet spot if we're meeting by telehealth.
Come as you are. My job is to listen without judgment and help you recognize the strengths you already have.
