How to Stop a Panic Attack: What Actually Helps in the Moment

A panic attack can be genuinely frightening — a sudden wave of intense fear with a pounding heart, shortness of breath, chest tightness, dizziness, tingling, or a sense that something terrible is about to happen. Many people fear they're having a heart attack or losing control. Here's the reassuring truth: a panic attack is your body's alarm system misfiring. It is not medically dangerous, it typically peaks within about ten minutes, and it will pass. That said, panic symptoms can overlap with those of medical emergencies — new, severe, or unusual symptoms (such as first-time chest pain, fainting, or severe shortness of breath) should be medically evaluated.

In the moment, try this

When to get support

If panic attacks keep happening, or you start avoiding places and situations for fear of having one, that may be panic disorder — and it's very treatable. Because chest pain and shortness of breath can have medical causes too, it's worth checking with a provider the first time, to be safe.

Treatment works

Cognitive behavioral therapy is highly effective for panic — it helps retrain the fear response — and medication can help as well. You don't have to live braced for the next wave.

If you ever feel unsafe or are in crisis, call or text 988, dial 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.
